Harold Smith Obituary

Harold M. “Newt” Smith, Jr., 87, of Dunnstown, passed away Friday, February 14, 2020 at Susque-View Home, Lock Haven.

He was born in Bellefonte on August 31, 1932, the son of the late Harold M. Smith, Sr. and Edna Wolfe Smith.

Newt was a 1950 graduate of Lock Haven High School.

He was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.

On May 12, 1966, Newt married the former Virginia “Ginny” Phoenix, who survives.

Newt began working at the Hammermill Paper Company Lock Haven plant with a yard crew in 1955. He then worked in the bargaining unit as a cutter helper and paper trucker until 1966, when he became assistant shipping foreman. He worked in various supervisory positions in the finishing area and as supervisor of cutters before retiring in 1992 as the supervisor of warehousing and shipping after a combined 40 years of service.

He was a devoted member of the Mill Hall Church of Christ where he served as a past trustee and as a Deacon for many years.

He was a life member of the Lock Haven Elks, a member of the Lock Haven Moose and a past member of the Antlers Club of Williamsport.

Newt was an avid golfer and sports fan and enjoyed attending Penn State Football and Penn State Girls Basketball games. He took pride in tending to his farm in his earlier years. He also loved to dance at social gatherings, going fishing and his trips to Florida with his wife, Ginny. Newt simply cherished his time spent with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Kent A. (Kim) Strunk of Avis; three grandchildren, Kira Dicato, Krista Strunk and Kayla Pittenger Rockwell; two great grandchildren, Nora Jade Withey and Sylus Pittenger; and his loving dog and buddy, Pepper.
